Note
Further etymology uncertain, probably a non-IE loanword. Note also ME arch 'curve, or part of a curve; curved object' <- OFr. arche f. 'arch, edifice' < Latin arca 'chest, coffer'; "also, through some confusion, used in Old French for arc m. 'bow' < Lat. arcum 'bow'." (OED 1885). TLF says: "Empr. à un b. lat. *arca pour arcus (arc*)".
