1. Alb. hell, hejë m. 'spear, spit' < PAlb. *skōla < PIE. *skel- v. 'to cut, to split' 2. Gr. σκῶλος m. ‘pointed pole; thorn, prickle’. Origin IE? "Resembles σκόλοψ 'pointed pole' and, outside Greek, Alb. hell 'spit, icicle' < *skōl-o-; without *s-, Lith. kuõlas 'pole' < *kōl-o- and OCS kolъ 'pole' < *kol-o-. These words probably all derive from PIE *kelH- v. 'to hew'.” (RB).
