PGm. *knība-, *knīban- m. ‘knife’ < proto-form. *ǵneibh-o-, *ǵneibh-on-. Of uncertain etymology (OED). "A deverbal noun, possibly derived from a lost strong verb *knīban-" (GK). "Forms with p are found in Dutch knijp, Low German knîp, kniep, German kneip (also kneupe, gneip, gnippe)" (OED).
