SEO rejects the hypothesis of borrowing from a Romance word such as MLat. boscus 'gathered wood; wood (small forest)'. Today the Romance reflexes are generally taken to be of Germanic origin. Compare OFr. bois 'wood (small forest; wood (material)', probably from OFrk. *bŏsk- 'bush', reconstructable from OHG, OS busc and attested in placenames as early as 937, as well as in the compound brâmalbusc 'bramble, blackberry bush' (TLF).
