"In actual use most commonly plural: ligna 'firewood'."(CDB). Possibly derived from *leg- v. 'to collect', which if true suggests that the term originally had the more specific sense of wood gathered for fuel. An alternative derivation is from *legh- v. 'to lie' (MDV).
