GK affirms that ON járn is a loanword from Old Irish. This is an old controversy: Marstrander argued in the strongest terms that it was not: "Utviklingen av ísarn ti iarn er... fællesnordisk og høist sandsynlig utspillet længe før den egentlige vikingetid" (Marstrander 1915: 123).
