Note
Compare W. Mehefyn, MoBret. Mezeven 'June', compounds of PCelt. *medyo- 'middle' and PCelt. *samo- 'summer' (RM). Possibly a loanword from Welsh: note that no other compounds are found in Irish with the prefix meith- 'mid'. DIN analyses Ir. meitheamh as "the middle month of summer"; however the word appears to be non-transparent in Irish, judging by the phrases Meitheamh an tSamhraidh 'midsummer' and Meitheamh an Fhómhair 'mid-autumn, September'.
