PCelt. *magos- ‘plain, field’ < PIE.*meǵh₂- 'great' (?) (IEW: 709). "MW maes and MBret. maes should be derived from a formation in *-tu, i.e. PCelt. *magestu-. The connection with the PIE adjective *meǵh₂- 'great' is uncertain. Skt. mahī́- 'great (f.), earth' is a substantivized adjective, originally a standing epithet of 'earth'." (RM).
