PCelt. *ambliyon- ‘navel’ < PIE. *h₃nobh-li- 'navel, nave' / OIr. imbliu [n, m or f] (DIL imliu , imbliu ) Skt. nā́bhi-, Gr. omphalós, Lat. umbilīcus, OE nafela / Like Lat. umbilicus, the stem of the PCelt. word for 'navel' generalized the PIE oblique stem *h₃nbhl-. For the development of the initial *am- > OIr. im cf. *angʷen- 'butter' (RM).
