Gr. πέλεκυς m. ‘axe, double axe, hatchet’, Skt. paraśú- m. 'axe, battle-axe', Oss. færæt 'axe'. "Pre-Greek" (RB); "the Greek and Sanskrit words represent a pre-historic borrowing from a non-IE, Asiatic source... represented by Akkadian pilakku and Sumerian balag 'axe' " (CDB). "These words have long been identified with Akk. pilakku , which however never means 'axe', but rather 'spindle'. Thus, this comparison must be given up" (RB).
