"Ulterior origin obscure" (OED)., "Ulterior origin obscure" (OED). "Already found in the Glosses of Junius, which Graif assigns to the eighth or ninth century" (Hehn 1888: 360). "De västgerm. språken ha ett inhemskt uttryck: *hoppan- i ty. hopfen ov., besl. med ty. dial. hupp, tofs (efter humlekottarna); själva växten är hos germanerna inhemsk" (SEO). Middle Dutch hoppe = late OHG. hopfo = medieval Latin hupa (for *huppa) (OED).
