Lat. nāpus 'turnip' <- Gr. νᾶπυ 'mustard': of pre-Greek origin (RB). "Gr. νᾶπυ is taken over in Latin as nāpus 'turnip' (Plin.) and σίναπι(ς) as sinapi(s) 'mustard', from which Go. sina(s), OHG. senf 'mustard', etc., have been borrowed" (RB). OED disagrees: "The etymology < ancient Greek νᾶπυ mustard, asserted by Oxf. Latin Dict., is semantically difficult" (OED, 2003).
Robert Beekes (with the assistance of Lucien van Beek). "σίνᾱπι" in: Etymological Dictionary of Greek. Indo-European Etymological Dictionaries Online. Edited by Alexander Lubotsky. Brill, 2014.
