Note
Further etymology obscure. ”A derivation from the root *gʷher- 'warm, heat' (IEW 493, cf. Skt. háras- 'heat') is possible, in principle, but there is no semantic connection. A PCelt. stem *gere- would also be regularly derivable form a PIE. compound *ǵhwer-h₁ep- 'beast-fat' (cf. Lat. ferus 'wild', OCS. zvěrъ 'beast', Gr. thḗr 'beast', and Lat. ad-eps 'suet, lard', Hitt. apuzzi 'animal fat, tallow', ToB op 'fatness'). However, this appears highly artificial” (RM)
