1. PGm. *aluþ- n. ‘ale, beer’ < proto-form. *h₂el-u- (GK) 2. PSl. olъ m. ‘fermented liquor, beer’ < BSl. *alu < PIE. *h₂el-u- (RD). No certain etymology. Kroonen claims that forms in Baltic, Finno-Ugric, Indo-Iranian etc. were borrowed from Germanic. Others treat this item as common PIE inheritance.
