Note
Etymology uncertain. According to SEO, ODa. dā, OSw. dā <- OE. dā f. 'female fallow deer'. Alternatively, inherited from an "Anglo-Norse" dajō-, dajōn- f. ‘female animal, (fallow) deer’ as proposed by GK. "Possibly related to *dajjan- v. 'to suckle': E doe has a broad semantic range, referring to a wide variety of female animals, e.g. deer, goat, rabbit, hare, and thus supports an original meaning 'suckling animal'.” (GK)
