"The word seems to have meant properly a male animal in its prime" (OED) " An Hart is called the firste yeare a Calfe, the seconde a Brocket, the thirde a Spayde, the fourth a Staggerd, the fifth a Stagge" (Gascoigne 1575, cited in OED at 'staggard').
