"Several IE languages reflect a similar preform *h₂e/ogʷh- without an internal nasal: Gr. ἔχις 'snake', Arm. iž, Gr. ὄφις 'snake', Skt. áhi-, Av. aži- 'snake, dragon'. Maybe *n was introduced into this stem by analogy with verbs for v. 'to twist, wind' " (MDV). ALSO: "The traditional connection with Arm. iž, instr. -iw 'id.' is problematic, since it presupposes a pre-form *Hēgʷhi- (with unexplainable lengthened grade)" (RB)
