MDu. *robbe 'rabbit'. A mysterious and barely attested dialectal term. Early Modern Dutch robbe, robbeken 'rabbit' < MDu. *robbe, glossed as 'cuniculus' by the lexicographer Kiliaan in 1599 (dialectal form, western Flanders). Compare Fr. rabotte f. 'rabbit' (dialectal form, central France) < MFr. *rabotte f. 'rabbit' < *robotte 'rabbit' <- MDu. *robbe ‘rabbit’; Walloon robète, robett 'rabbit' <- MDu. *robbe (OED, TLF).
