Note
Etymology disputed. Of probable Iberian origin, compare Port. láparo 'young rabbit or hare' from an Ibero-Romance root given as *lapp or *lappa, possibly meaning 'flat stone', which may be also at the origin of Pt. lapa 'roche saillante; caverne, grotte' (TLF). For the metonymic connection between rabbits and subterranean spaces, compare Lat. cuniculus 'rabbit; rabbit burrow; subterranean passage or mine', also of probable Iberian origin. The Portuguese lexicographer Antenor Nascentes gives the following etymology: Port. láparo < Lat. lepus, leporis m. ‘hare’ <- Gr. λεβηρίς f. ‘rabbit’.
