Further etymology: either Lat. cunīculus is a loan from Gr. κύνικλος n. 'rabbit' (WH), or vice versa. Compare Basq. untxi 'rabbit'. The Iberian peninsula is the source of Roman knowledge of the rabbit, which was exploited for its skin. Either the original meaning "burrow" was adapted to the rabbit, or vice versa.
