Note
Of controversial origin. Iberian scholars see the word as Romance but disagree on details. According to Corominas: Pt. raposa <- Sp. raposa (1251) < Old Spanish & dial. rabosa (XIIIs.), a derivative from rabo ‘tail’, the -p- being due to the influence of Asturian rapiega ‘male fox’ and Sp. rapina ‘theft, banditry’.  According to Machado, Pt. raposa <- Asturian or Leonese, already attested 1123 (DH). But note Proto-Iranian *raupaśa- 'fox' <  Indo-Iran. *raupāća- 'fox', prob. also 'jackal' (cf.  Sogdian rwps- f., Khwaresmian rwbs f., Shughni růpc(ak) f., Ishkashimi urvesok, Yazghulami rəpc, rəbc, Yidgha rūso, Munji ráwsa, etc).  Finno-Ugric *repä 'fox' is an Aryan loan, while -āćá- is an Indo-Iranian animal suffix (HKM).
