"An exclusively Nordic word with no certain etymology. It seems attractive to me, however, to connect the word to Swiss German gōppə v. 'to play (of cats)' < *gaubb-" (GK). But compare also OE géopan v. 'to devour', ON gapa 'animal's mouth' etc. (Falk & Torp). Unrelated to *geupan- v. 'to be hollow'." (GK)
