Often connected with Pers. palang 'leopard'. Turner, however, points out the existence of the apparent homonym pŕ̊dāku m. 'snake' alongside pr̥dāku- m. 'tiger, panther' and notes: "If with H. W. Bailey BSOAS xi 782 orig. meaning is ʻspottedʼ, both may be same word and the latter not necessarily ← PIIr. (Psht. pṛāng, &c.)"
