Compare OIr. fáel m. 'wolf' < PCelt. *waylo- < PIE *waylo- 'wolf'. The correspondence "could be accidental, since it is based on only two IE languages." (RM) "Arm. gayl and PCelt. *way-lo- are usually interpreted as 'the howler' and derived from PIE *wai- ... One may conclude that PIE *wḷkʷo- 'wolf' has been replaced by (or contaminated with) *wai-lo- possibly 'howler' in Armenian and Celtic for reasons of tabu" (HKM).
