Note
A poetic term. Etymology uncertain: derivation from ON gaga v. 'to mock' (AEW); or loan from Old Irish. Marstrander (1915) considered that MIr. gagarr was a loan from Old Norse. Later work (Kelly, Early Irish Farming) argues that this cannot be so, and that in fact Old Norse may well have borrowed the term from Old Irish (see Borkent 2014:44)
