Gr. χοῖρος m., f. ‘(young) pig, piglet’. ”Probably represents *χορ- ος,, and in this case may be cognate with Alb. derr < ǵhoiro- 'swine'. Since wild pigs are brushed, it may also be related to χήρ 'hedgehog', which is related to Lat. ēr. In view of the limited distribution, we may wonder whether this etymon is a substrate word” (RB).
