OIr. cráin f. 'sow' < *krākni- 'grunter' (CDB). If the etymology is correct, the word can be connected with Lat. crōcīre v. 'to croak', Lith. krokti- 'grunt', etc. (CDB). But compare Eng. crone 'withered old woman; old ewe', which OED relates to "early modern Dutch kronje , karonje , ‘adasia, ouis vetula, rejecula’ (Kilian), believed to be the same word as karonje , kronje , Middle Dutch caroonje , croonje 'carcass' <- Northern French carogne 'carcass." (OED). Also Fr. charogne f. 'carcass' < VLat. *caronia < Lat. caro, carnis 'flesh, meat' (TLF).
