"Has been derived from the verb *hurzōn- v. 'to rush'... Another possibility is that the word - like *paþa- 'path' and ON refr 'fox' was borrowed from the Alans during the Migration Period" (GK), "The affinities of the word outside Germanic are uncertain: the conjecture that Germanic *horso- , pre-Germanic *kurso- was from the root *kurs- of Latin currere ‘to run’ is favoured by many; but other derivations have also been suggested" (OED).
