1. PCelt. *tarwo- < PIE. *tawro- (RM); 2. Lat. taurus m. ‘bull’ < PItal. *tauro- (MDV); 3. PGm. *þeura- m. ‘bull’ (GK); 4. Gr. ταῦρος [m.] ‘bull’ (Il.) < IE? *teh₂u-ro- 'bull' (RB); PSl. *tȗrъ m. ‘aurochs’ < BSl. *taurós < PIE. *th₂euro- (tauro- ) (RD). "The earlier history of the word is uncertain: there is no cognate in IIr. or Tocharian, whereas there are Semitic words for 'bull' which are conspicuously similar. Hence, it may have been an early loanword of the form *tauro- into the western IE languages" (MDV). "Gm. words with initial st- are probably not cognate, e.g. Go. stiur, OHG. stior 'bull', because these point to older *eu (without initial s-, ON. þjórr ). Av. staora- [m.] 'big cattle' deviates slightly in meaning. Comparable forms are found in Semitic: Akk. šūru , Aram. tōr , Hebr. šōr . If the similarity is not accidental, there must have been a loan, either from IE into Semitic or vice versa, or from a third common source. If the word is IE, ταῦρος is traditionally connected with the group of ταΰς" (RB).
