Attested late 13th century. Etymology uncertain. "A Gaulish reflex of PCelt. *delgo- ‘pin, needle’ < PIE *dhelg- 'sting' may be preserved in Fr. dial. dail 'sickle' [sic], Pr. dalh" (RM). Compare LLat. daculum 'scythe', also of obscure origin (TLF).
